This overview provides an outline of how and why Blue Northern Energy selected to develop the BN National Trail Biodiesel project.

Blue Northern Energy, LLC  (BNE) and the LLC entity it created, BN National Trail Holdings began searching for a site to commercialize a more energy efficient and low C02 processing technology for the biodiesel industry. A national search for a shovel ready project site to develop was launched BNE completed an asset purchase of National Trail Biodiesel Group (NTBG) in August 2009.

BN National Trail is extending the pre-work of its predecessor company, National Trail Biodiesel Group LLC, to make the business model more robust. This pre-work included secured EPA as well as state, county, and city permits. NTBG four years of development work also resulted in a completed feasibility study and engineering plans. The National Trail Biodiesel was originally formed as an agriculture coalition of five southern IL counties in 2001. Over an eight year period, with recommendations from feasibility studies and due diligence on the part of several equity firms, government organizations, and private investors, the National Trail project (the “Project”) took shape.

Blue Northern Energy saw the Project’s potential and stepped in to realize the value of what the coalition had worked studiously to build. The first step in unlocking the Project’s value was to change the business model from it’s original ideation to a structure designed to maximize the use of technological innovation in the biofuels industry coupled with a different philosophy of how to profitably manage plant production.
